Sidikalang Coffee: The Classic Flavor of Coffee

Sidikalang is the capital of Dairi Regency. It's located in northwestern part of North Sumatra which cover area about 110,15 km2 or about 2,67% of total North Sumatra. Sidikalang district immediately to the west of Lake Toba, the massive crater lake in North Sumatra.
Sidikalang is one of the coffee producers, one of the best in Indonesia. Coffee farming center of Sidikalang is in the area of Bukit Barisan, exactly in the highland of Dairi. The name of Sidikalang is taken from the name of the capital city in District Dairi. The cool and fresh air, and the montainous land which is rich of mineral, creating a high quality of green beans.

Sidikalang coffees have a different flavor profile, more like a classic Mandheling. Part of this is due to micro-climates and influences from the Lake, part is due to the cultivar. The altitude for coffee ranges from 1200 meters to 1500 meters in altitude. The area has its own special long bean type, a form of Typica. Sidikalang is found less and less frequently in Sumatra and other parts of Indonesia. Much of the Typica was lost in the late 1880s, when Coffee Leaf Rust swept through Indonesia. However, both the Bergendal and Sidikalang varieties of Typica can still be found, especially at higher altitudes and in remote areas.

The area around Sidikalang is still partly planted in it's eponymous cultivar, as well as the newer Ateng type. We can't say exactly how much is this old Typica type but a good portion certainly is. This proprietary lot of coffee was custom decaffeinated for California importer Sweet Maria's. Like our caffeinated Sidikalang offering, It just which offers a brighter, less-funky cup profile than most Sumatrans, it shows that if you start with better quality green coffee, the decaf results are markedly better. And once again, the Veracruz, Mexico mountain water processing shows why decafs are capable of turning heads! Coffee Sidikalang also been able to compete with Brazilian coffee, which is one of the best coffee in the world. Overall extensive Robusta Coffee plantation district in Dairi is 14,117 hectares with a production of 6770.33 tons / year, while Arabica coffee plantation area of 5771.5 hectares with a production of 2639.05 tons / year.

When we visited the city Sidikalang, then we will find a lot of coffee plantations. And also the production with a varied coffee brands sold in this city. We can also buy directly unprocessed coffee beans. There are still a lot of coffee farmers who sell coffee traditionally in Sidikalang. Or produce and use their each local brands.

Sidikalang Arabica coffee, is one of the speciality coffee from North Sumatra which is undoubtedly great in flavour. The taste and aroma of Sidikalang coffee are compatible with the best coffees from around the world.
